Can You Die From Drinking Too Much Soda?
                        -Time magazine

On February 8, 2014 Alexandra Sifferlin, of Time magazine published an article. In the odd yet informative article, “Can You Die From Drinking Too Much Soda?” Alexandra discusses a family who is being charged for murder. The parents of a young girl, forcefully made their daughter drink excessive amounts of water and grape juice, causing her to die. The young girl, Alexa, was punished for drinking her grandmothers grape soda. Her punishment was to drink “several 12-ounce bottles” in a matter of one to two hours. After drinking all that soda, Alexa started to scream in pain, urinate and vomit. She was soon paralyzed and unconscious. After doing a full autopsy of her body, they discovered that to excess amount of fluids had caused her brain to swell. After such a discovery, the officially called it homicide. Alexa had died of “acute fluid intoxication.” Acute fluid intoxication, also known as water intoxication and/or water poisoning is a case in which the blood stream becomes too concentrated with electrolytes, causing it to be unable to longer function. It is said to be about the amount of fluid consumed rather than the type. However, in this case soda worsened the problem due to its tendency to break down the carbonated fluid after consumption.

  2. How could parents be this cruel? I do not think drinking a tiny amount of grape soda was a huge deal. Those parents do not deserve to be parents. The parents could have simply told her that soda is not a healthy substance. I will not in any shape or form understand most people.

  3. This is by far the dumbest way to punish a child. A simple talk on what Alexa did wrong would have sufficed. It is understand why this case is being considered murder. Alexa's death is scary, hard to believe things like this actually happen. It is useful to know an excess amount of fluids could lead to death. The article choice was fantastic.

  4. This article shows the lack of parenting skills some people have. People should attend special parenting classes before they are allowed to have children because this kind of treatment is too harsh. Instead of being happy and blessed with their child, they are torturing her. People who act this way with their children should not even deserve to be called parents. Fantastic job on your blog Karnie!

  5. It is baffling the way this girls parents punished her. Although discipline is important and crucial to raising children, it should not be this extreme and dangerous. Reading this blog gave me goosebumps. If the situation was handled differently or an alternative method of punishment was used, Alexa could still be alive. Fantastic job on the mournful yet compelling topic Karine.

  6. How could any parent be so heartless to actually punish their child in such a harsh and abusing manner? Discipline is most definitely important for a child during their youthful years, but there is a certain boundary, which should not be crossed during this process. Alexa did not deserve to be tortured and murdered by her parents. She had a long and delightful life ahead of her that she was not allowed the reach due to her parents' mistake.

  7. Discipline is essential when raising a child, but it is downright repulsive when it is carried out ignorantly. The parents of the poor young child, Alexa were unaware of the extreme degree their child’s punishment was found. I am positive Alexa’s parents would never want to wish any type of harm to their child. Unfortunately the parents’ inanity caused an ingenuous child to pass away.

  8. First off, which parent in their sane mind would want to physically punish their child, and second why torture a poor girl by overfeeding her liquids to the point she yells in pain. These parents need downright mental assistance after they serve their sentence in jail. It truly is depressing hearing about the unfortunate inhumane ways parents treat their so called treasured children.

  9. This is outrageous! Who in the right mind can torture their children to point of death? Punishing young Alexa by making her drink tons of soda for the small amount she consumed in the beginning is not only cruel and unusual, but illogical in every sense. In no way shape or form does this type of punishment instill discipline, but instead fatal injuries; just how it all ended. Good job on the blog Karnie!
